Speculations of the competition

Post  HaydenLee on Mon Aug 04, 2008 9:03 pm

Write things about the competition! Impressed by Stephen's spanish? Jayson's line-reciting? Yasmin's rote memory? Observations posted here.

Interesting...um...statistics? :S

Post  HaydenLee on Mon Aug 04, 2008 9:06 pm

Well firstly the door-prizes were almuni-rigged.
Secondly, in terms of the place that you got...it's the place that you are in Australia! e.g. even though I came 7th, due to the top two ties I came 5th, and since in each of the upper ties there was a New Zealander, and the next person (Casey) is counted as 2nd, what your rank is what your rank is for Australia too! (As opposed to if a New Zealander hadn't been in a tie, then we would have had to subtract a rank etc.)
This doesn't apply to the New Zealanders who are 1st and 2nd respectively.
I'm sorry this post/site is in such a shambles atm; it's poor layout etc. reflects the state of my brain rite now... pale someone can help me be admin for this if they like Razz

lol thanks! I'm still sick so the site sort of reflects that...
Please make sure to tell me parts to improve, cos I can't monitor every facet of the entire site!
btw, about my latin things i was a little wrong: Sylva, not sylvia, means forest/wood.
I forgot to tell you that insula also means island (not just block of flats)

This really ought to go under chit chat.

Post  StephenMackereth on Wed Aug 06, 2008 5:56 pm

I remember now. We always spelt it 'silva'. It came up in that story about the werewolf (are you doing the cambridge latin course?)

Quite right with the insula as well. Here's the list I made of all the neuroscience-related Latin I could think of (you'll have to work out the relevant structures yourself though). Hope you like it. All adjectives are given in the masculine singular form (e.g. 'niger' is the masculine form of 'nigra', as in 'substantia nigra'). Enjoy!

Amygdala - Almond
Arena - Sand
Arenareus - Sandy
Caeruleus - Sea-blue
Calcar - Spur
Calcar avis - The cockerel's spur
Callosus - Callous (from callum "hard skin")
Cauda - Tail

Cinereus - Like ash
Cingulum - Girdle
Claustrum - Enclosed space
Coeruleus - "Caeruleus" misspelt
Colliculus - Small hill
Cornu, pl. cornua - Horn
Corona - Crown
Corpus, pl. corpora - Body
Crus - Leg
Durus - Hard
Foramen - Hole
Fornix - Arch
Genu - Knee
Globus - Globe
Gyrus - Circular / rounded (adj. / n.)
Hippocampus - Seahorse
Innominatus - Unnamed
Insula - Island
Lamina - Sheet
Locus - Place
Mamma - Breast
Mammilla - Nipple
Mater - Mother
Medulla - Middle
Niger - Black
Obex - Barrier
Occiput - The back of the head (= ob + caput)
Pallidus - Pale

Sorry it killed my formatting.

Quite right, 'tempus' also means 'time' I think. I mean temples as in 'forehead', not 'place of worship'. The latter is 'templum' isn't it?

BTW I no longer take latin so don't ask me hard questions :-)

Now, I don't really know the ethical/legal/personal ramifications of putting these pics on the net ...so if any of you have a problem with it at all (or know the ethical/legal/personal ramifications) please tell me.

Somebody please write something!

Post  StephenMackereth on Tue Aug 26, 2008 4:45 pm

This topic is dead. I will now attempt to defibrillate it. Let us cast our minds back to August 1-5..... the magnificent sandstone buildings.... the green, textured restrooms which smelled of rubber... the pastries at morning tea... Indooroopilly Mall (if you stayed at Taringa)... receiving those emails where someone else had asked Linda a question, and noticing how much smarter than you they sounded.... scaring the waitresses at Dell'Ugo Ristorante Italiano by talking about cerebellar hernias... diagnosing Jayson with Tourette's.... being shorter than Kieran..... cruising the water-highways of Brisbane on the City Cat[apult]..... scaring that other guy on the Catapult....

There's a load of reminiscent garbage for you to digest. Please say something. It relieves the monotony

I thought they were yellowish marble, but I think someone said it was sandstone. Maybe it said in the QBI brochures they gave us at the end.

Yeah, I think you did miss some of it (e.g. the City Catapult tour, diagnosing Jayson (and we diagnosed him with many other conditions besides, including neurological AIDS and cocaine addiction).

The cerebellar hernias was at the restaurant, so I would have thought you were there, but then again you might not have arrived yet. We [me, Jayson, Kieran, and Jack] were the first ones there.

Yeah, I'm quite nostalgic too (a trait which some have characterised as an unwillingness to grow up and be mature... probably correct....)

You guys have to post your memories too now
